Seafood Information Network Industry Webinar

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Dear Colleague,

We invite you to participate in a series of world class industry meetings you can attend from your PC. You see the presentations live and can ask questions, exactly as you would at a traditional seminar. The service is completely free and no video conferencing equipment is required. We aim to trial the technology with a series of three presentations. If successful, the talks will continue on a regular basis.

The Keynote seminar:
Thursday 18th March 2010. 16.00 GMT (London)  [11:00 AM EST (New York);  8:00 AM PST (San Francisco)]

The Future of Fishing  -  Grimur Valdimarsson, Advisor to the Assistant Director General, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department - FAO

Environmentalism and environmental activism are on the rise and are reaching ever-farther into the market place. “Customer perception” is reality to retailers.  There is a call for transparency and certification in fisheries like never before – reflecting a general distrust in the sector. Undeniably fisheries have been non-managed or mismanaged in many parts of the world for decades and this has been reflected in the world’s media in a very negative way. Thus, the question being raised is whether capture fisheries can be managed at all. To those who say that fisheries are unmanageable the logical solution is to ban fisheries, close them down, and withdraw licences to fish. The view is also being voiced that large-scale capture of wild animal populations is unethical.

For further information, visit the link below.  Subsequent speakers will include Peter Howgate who will present a talk on seafood freshness and sensory evaluation and Karen Galloway who will cover Chilled vs. Frozen – Understanding the Market.

Click here for more information and register for the seminars via the Seafood Information Network (UK).
A full set of instructions will be sent out to the chosen attendees, including practice session.  Pre-registering by March 17, 2010 is highly recommended.

Kind Regards
