Aulostomus maculatus - Trumpetfish
| Trumpetfish are long, slender fish that usually appear grey or brown in color. In Hawaii, a bright yellow color phase also occurs. They are solitary hunters that sneak up on their prey while hovering in schools of butterflyfish or swimming alongside other larger fish to ambush smaller fish and shrimp. Trumpetfish can grow to 27 inches and are found throughout warm water oceans on rocky and coral reefs to depths of over 120 feet.

| Western Atlantic: southern Florida, USA and Bermuda to northern South America. East to St. Paul's Rocks.

| Habitat |
| Commonly found in weedy areas and especially around reefs, where they usually swim snout-down among sea whips (gorgonians). A solitary ambusher of small fishes and crustaceans that lurk among branching coral or gorgonians. Often swims behind large herbivorous fishes to sneak up on prey.
